modem does not hangup

Hi,

After i have left my message i hang up but the modem stays off hook and
does not hang up the line. The system continues to record until the time
has elapsed.

Is this a software problem or compatibility issue with my modem ? Im
using a GVC external 33600 Voice Fax model VF-1128V/VR6.

Hi Denny,

this is a known problem with _some_ voice modem/PBX
combinations.

The problem here is hangup detection. Your modem does not detect
properly when a call is disconnected. As I mentioned before there are
some combinations of modems and PBXs that work pretty well, others
not. What you can try: Connect your modem directly to your public line
instead of your PBX (just to see how it works then). If this would work
you would need to try to modify the hangup tone that your PBX is
sending. If it doesn't work, you can try to replace the modem or you
could also try to set your modem to a different region. Many modems
can detect different hangup tones depending on the country because the
public networks in different countries also use different hangup tones.
So you would first need to find out to which country's tone patterns your
PBX conforms to and then set your modem to that country. You could
check first if your PBX sends some hangup tones at all by connecting
a call with two phones and hangup one side. Then listen on the other side
if you can hear some tones at all. If not then you need to try to get your
PBX to send some hangup tones. Then try to modify your modems country
setting if it still doesn't work.

Generally it would be best to replace your modem with some more
professional telephony hardware like Intel Dialogic oder CallURL
(www.callurl.com). These products come with tools that are able to
learn the tones of your PBX or the network and thus will properly detect
tones.

TERAVoice may add an additional feature to disconnect calls based on
silence detection, but this is currently low-priority because TERAVoice
is focused on professional solutions and non-modem devices don't have
this problem.
